WHAT IS BATERIA?

Picture
Bateria is the name given to a group of musicians that play percussion instruments in the Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro. Most of these instruments were introduced in Brazil by the African people in the colonization period. Across the years they were mixed with the Brazilian culture, which created different rhythms that will be taught during the classes such as samba from Rio and batucada from Bahia, a northern state.

BATERIA AT WHARTON

Picture
Bateria continues to spread Brazilian drumming to the Wharton and UPenn community. Performing at several Wharton events, including Welcome Weekends, Bateria remains one of Wharton’s flagship acts. The bateria classes are taught by Alex Shaw, a professional teacher hired to lead students from all nationalities to become accomplished drummers.
